UNY Biology Education Students Sharpen Scientific Visualization Skills Through Guest Lectures on Biology Illustration

The Biology Education Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University, held a guest lecture on Biology Illustration on October 8 and 15, 2025. The event, held on October 8 and 15, 2025, featured Imas Dhamar Seno Aji, a Fine Arts practitioner, as the resource person.
The guest lecture was conducted online and attended by students taking the Biology Illustration course. The guest lecture shared insights on the basic principles of illustration and provided live demonstrations of the use of digital applications in scientific drawing. One session featured a practical session on drawing facial anatomy, which provides fundamental practice in understanding proportion and visual structure. These skills are closely related to the ability of prospective biology teachers to accurately and communicatively depict human anatomy, organ structure, tissue, and the morphology of living things.
Through this activity, students are trained to develop scientific visual literacy that combines art, science, and digital technology. This competency is highly relevant to the demands of today's education sector, where biology teachers are required to present scientific concepts through visual media that are engaging, informative, and adaptable to technological developments.
One student participant expressed his positive impression of the activity. "I'm inspired to develop digital illustration-based biology learning media, such as infographics and simple animations. Furthermore, I want to start practicing my manual and digital drawing skills so I can create more engaging, creative, and digitally-adapted teaching materials that reflect the characteristics of today's digital generation," he said.
This activity is expected to broaden students' horizons and encourage them to continue innovating in developing inspiring and contextual biology learning media that meet the needs of the times.
